Science

Science is taught in line with the Jersey Curriculum. The curriculum allows staff to plan, teach and assess scientific development throughout the school.

La Moye School aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them.
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.

Science is taught as a discrete core subject but every effort is made to link it with other areas of the curriculum in a cross-curricular way. In the Foundation Years, these links are more evident because of the nature and structure of the planned day.

There is real emphasis on ‘Working Scientifically’ and on the practical and observational investigation skills. Pupils are encouraged to ask as many questions as they can. Enquiry includes: observing over time; pattern seeking; identifying, classifying and grouping; comparative and fair testing (controlled investigations); and researching using secondary sources. Pupils should seek answers to questions through collecting, analysing and presenting data. Scientific vocabulary is built up throughout the school.

It remains our ultimate aim to ensure our pupils not only have the necessary scientific skills but also to promote and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena.

A special aspect of our Science and Personal, Social and Health Education (P.S.H.E) is Sex and Relationships Education. Animal reproduction and life cycles are included in the lower school. In Year 6 the subject is revisited and a special programme of study is taught to help prepare pupils for the changes in puberty. This is taught sensitively and carefully. All parents have the option to view the teaching content and materials before this is taught.
